Sam Houston Race Park Wagering and Payout Rules

 

Bet Minimums

  • $2.00- Win, Place and Show
  • $1.00- Exacta, Daily Double and Pick 3
  • $0.50- Trifecta, Pick 4, Pick 5 and Pick 6
  • $0.20- Jackpot Hi-5
  • $0.10- Superfecta

 

Wagering Takeouts

  • 18%- Win, Place and Show
  • 20%- Exacta
  • 25%- Trifecta, Superfecta 
  • 12%- Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, Pick 6 and Jackpot Hi-5

 

Carryover Wagers

Sam Houston Race Park offers three carryover wagers:

  • Pick 6: Offered on the last six (6) races
  • Pick 5: Offered on the last five (5) races. When an “Early Pick 5” is offered, any carryover amount from the Early Pick 5 will be moved into the Late Pick 5
  • Jackpot Hi-5: Offered in Race 3 and the last Race of the card

Payout Rules

 

Daily Double (TxRC 321.307) Texas Administrative Code (state.tx.us)

  • The Daily Double consists of selecting the winners of two consecutive designated races.  
  • The Daily Double is a non-carryover wager at Sam Houston Race Park.
  • If before the first race of a daily double is run, an animal entered in either race is scratched or otherwise prevented from racing, all money wagered on the affected animal shall be deducted from the daily double pool and refunded to the holders of tickets on the affected animal.
  • If after the first race of a daily double is run, an animal entered in the second race is scratched or otherwise prevented from racing, a consolation daily double shall be awarded. All tickets which select an animal in the first race with the affected animal in the second race shall be deducted from the daily double pool and this amount shall be placed in a consolation pool. The consolation pool shall be distributed as a straight pool to the holders of tickets who correctly selected the winner of the first race with the affected animal in the second race.

 

Pick Three (TxRC Rule 321.313) Texas Administrative Code (state.tx.us)

  • The Pick 3 consists of selecting the winners of three consecutive designated races.  
  • The Pick 3 is a non-carryover wager at Sam Houston Race Park.
  • A late scratch in any leg of the Pick Three will result the actual favorite, as shown by the largest amount wagered in the win pool at the time of the start of the race, will be substituted for the non starting selection for all purposes, including pool calculations and payoffs. If there are two or more favorites in the win pool, both favorites will be substituted for the non-starting selection. 
  • When the condition of the turf course warrants a change of racing surface and such change has not been made known to the betting public prior to the close of wagering for the first Pick Three, the stewards shall declare each changed race a "no contest" and will be calculated as an “ALL” for the Pick Three purposes (All Pick Three tickets will receive the winner of the affected race as the selection for that race).

Pick Four (TxRC Rule 321.313) Texas Administrative Code (state.tx.us)

  • The Pick 4 consists of selecting the winners of four consecutive designated races.  
  • The Pick 4 is a non-carryover wager at Sam Houston Race Park 
  • A late scratch in any leg of the Pick Four will result the actual favorite, as shown by the largest amount wagered in the win pool at the time of the start of the race, will be substituted for the non starting selection for all purposes, including pool calculations and payoffs. If there are two or more favorites in the win pool, both favorites will be substituted for the non-starting selection. 
  • There are no consolation payoffs in the Pick Four. 
  • Any change in racing surface for the second, third, or fourth legs of the Pick Four, that was not made known to the public prior to the start of the first race of the Pick Four sequence, the stewards shall declare each changed race a "no contest" and will be calculated as an “ALL” for Pick 4 purposes (All Pick Four tickets will receive the winner of the affected race as the selection for that race). 
  • There are no carryovers in the Pick Four; if no perfect tickets are sold the wager will pay to all tickets with the greatest number of winners. 

 

Pick Five (TxRC Rule 321.313) Texas Administrative Code (state.tx.us)

  • The Pick 5 consists of selecting the winners of five consecutive designated races.  
  • The Pick 5 is offered as a carryover wager at Sam Houston Race Park.
    • 75% Major Pool (Payout) and 25% Minor Pool (Carryover)
  • All winning five out five tickets will share in the daily net Major Pool and 100% of any applicable carryover. 
  • If no ticket is sold that designates the winner in each of the races comprising the Pick 5, the Major Pool shall be carried forward to the next Pick 5 pool offered.
  • A late scratch in any leg of the Pick Five will result the actual favorite, as shown by the largest amount wagered in the win pool at the time of the start of the race, will be substituted for the non starting selection for all purposes, including pool calculations and payoffs. If there are two or more favorites in the win pool, both favorites will be substituted for the non-starting selection. 
  • Any change in racing surface for the second, third, fourth or fifth legs of the Pick Five, that was not made known to the public prior to the start of the first race of the Pick Five sequence, the stewards shall declare each changed race a "no contest" and will be calculated as an “ALL” for Pick 5 purposes (All Pick Five tickets will receive the winner of the affected race as the selection for that race). 
  • In addition, any surface change as depicted above results in the pool for the Pick Five, excluding any carryover, being distributed as a single-priced pool. The carryover from previous days will be carried forward to the next racing day. 
  • All winning tickets with five correct selections will share in 75% of the daily net pool, and 100% of the carryover. When there are no winning tickets with five correct selections, all ticket holders with most but not all correct selections share in 25% of 
  • the daily net pool. 
  • If there are no tickets with five winners, all ticket holders with the greatest number 
  • of winners share in 25% of the daily net pool, with the remainder of the net pool 
  • carried over to the next racing day. There is a mandatory payout of the entire net 
  • pool on the last day of the race meet. 

 

Pick Six- Space City Pick 6 (TxRC 321.312 Pick (n)) Texas Administrative Code (state.tx.us)

  • The Pick 6 consists of selecting the winners of six consecutive designated races.  
  • The Pick 6 is offered as a carryover wager at Sam Houston Race Park.
    • 75% Major Pool (Payout) and 25% Minor Pool (Carryover)
  • A late scratch in any leg of the Pick Six will result the actual favorite, as shown by the largest amount wagered in the win pool at the time of the start of the race, will be substituted for the non starting selection for all purposes, including pool calculations and payoffs. If there are two or more favorites in the win pool, both favorites will be substituted for the non-starting selection. 
  • Any change in racing surface for any leg of the Pick Six, that was not made known to the public prior to the start of the first race of the Pick Six sequence, the stewards shall declare each changed race a "no contest" and will be calculated as an “ALL” for Pick 6 purposes (All Pick Six tickets will receive the winner of the affected race as the selection for that race). 
  • In addition, any surface change as depicted above results in the pool for the Pick Six, excluding any carryover, being distributed as a single-priced pool. The carryover from previous days will be carried forward to the next racing day.
  • All winning tickets with six correct selections will share in 75% of the net pool, and 100% of the carryover. 
  • When there are no winning tickets with six correct selections, will pay to all tickets with the greatest number of winners. Those ticket holders will share in 25% of the days’ net pool. 
  • If there are no tickets with five winners, all ticket holders with the greatest number of winners share in 25% of the daily net pool, with the remainder of the net pool carried over to the next racing day. There is a mandatory payout of the entire net pool on the last day of the race meet. 

 

Super Hi-Five/ Houston Hi5 (TxRC 321.320) Texas Administrative Code (state.tx.us)

  • The Houston Hi-Five Jackpot consists of selecting at least five horses that will finish first, second, third, fourth, and fifth in a designated race. 
  • The Houston Hi-Five is offered as a unique winning wager (or jackpot wager). The entire pool is paid out only when there is one unique winning wager.
  • If there are multiple winning wagers in a race, 75% of the net amount wagered into that pool is paid to the multiple winners, with 25% of the net amount allotted to a carryover. If there are no perfect wagers, 100% of the net amount wagered carries over to the next eligible race. 

Carryover:

  • If there is a carryover into the last eligible race on closing day of the race meet, the entire pool including the carryover will be divided among all winning tickets.

Scratches: 

  • If due to a late scratch, the number of betting interests in the SH5 contest pool is reduced to fewer than seven (7), for the purposes of the SH5 pool only, such contest shall be declared a “No Contest” and the SH5 pool shall be subject to a refund, but not the SH5 carryover pool. 
  • If a horse is scratched or excused from racing, no further tickets shall be sold 
  • designating such horse and all tickets previously sold designating such horse 
  • shall be refunded. ​​​​​​​
