THE FUN IS BACK AT SAM HOUSTON RACE PARK IN 2018

HOUSTON, TX -- Sam Houston Race Park (www.shrp.com) will open its 24th Annual Live Racing Season with the kick off of the 2018 Thoroughbred Meet on Friday, January 19th! The meet will once again feature the single, richest thoroughbred racing day in Texas- the Houston Racing Festival, on Sunday, January 28th, 2018 with a post time of 12pm.  The Houston Racing Festival will feature the $400,000 Houston Ladies Classic (GIII), the $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup (GIII), the $75,000 Frontier Utilities Turf Sprint, the $50,000 Bara Lass Stakes, the $50,000 Groovy Stakes, and the $50,000 Houston Distaff.

 

For the first time opening weekend on Friday, January, 19th and Saturday, January 20th will also feature Camel & Ostrich Races in between live thoroughbred races! Opening night (and EVERY FRIDAY) will be 50¢ beer from 6-9pm so make sure to come early and stay late!

 

In addition to live racing, SHRP is bringing back the fun in 2018 with all of the best promotional events, as well as tons of new ideas that are sure to make you enjoy each trip better than your last. We will be hosting fan favorites such as the always exciting Wiener Dog Races, Camel and Ostrich Racing on four separate nights, a Food Truck Festival, Post Race performance by The Midget Wrestling Warriors during the thoroughbred meet, and Six Post-Race Concerts during our American Quarter Horse meet. In addition, Sam Houston Race Park will have a special Houston Astros World Series Victory Celebration! On January 27th, the authentic World Series Trophy will be at SHRP as part of its Houston tour, along with Astros Mascot Orbit and Astros Legend Art Howe. 

 

The 2018 Spring Concert Series will feature a star-studded lineup when it begins with Aaron Watson the first Saturday of April. It will continue with a concert each Saturday all month long and then an additional concert on the last day of the American Quarter Horse meet on Saturday, May 12th. Each concert will cost only $10 for general admission and take place immediately following live racing that evening. That’s not all though, Sam Houston Race Park will look to make EVERY NIGHT memorable this year with nightly between-race entertainment!

Some of the new features include - Baby Races, Kid Fights, Turtle Races, Zorb Ball Battle Races, Sumo Suit Races, May The 4TH Be With You- Star Wars Night, Nightly Military Appreciation Moment with Honorees, and the intro of the BRAND NEW HORSIN' AROUND CREW.

 

Sam Houston Race Park will also be installing a massive Inflatable Ninja Warrior Course (131' long x 19' wide x 14' tall) Brought to You By Todd Krampitz Foundation & Life Gift with a goal of getting everyone to say YES to organ donation registration! This enormous inflatable will be available for children and adults on live racing nights to help you answer the age old question of “which of your friends is the fastest ninja?”  The inflatable will cost $3 per ticket for all registered (or willing to register) donors, and $5 for anyone else on both Friday and Saturday nights.
