SAM HOUSTON RACE PARK ANNOUNCES ITS 2022 QUARTER HORSE STAKES SCHEDULE
The 25-Day Quarter Horse Live Racing Season Gets Underway on Friday, April 22
HOUSTON, TX - Sam Houston Race Park will kick off its 2022 Quarter Horse racing season on Friday, April 22. The 25-day meet continues through Saturday, June 18.
The stakes schedule will offer 21 features, including the running of the $150,000-added Sam Houston Futurity (G2) on Saturday, June 4. The notable list of Sam Houston Futurity champions includes War Colors, Azoom, All American Winner, Snowy Alibi, Especially Tres, Ivan James and This Is An Eagle. Several winners have gone on to national prominence, including Kiss My Hocks, who won in 2014 and was honored as AQHA Champion 2-Year-Old Colt and Trump My Record, who was named 2019 AQHA Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding.
Two regional AQHA Challenge stakes will be contested on Thursday, June 16 with the winners of the John Deere Juvenile and Adequan Derby earning berths into the Bank of America Racing Challenge Championships. Horseshoe Indianapolis in Shelbyville will host the national event on October 22.
Sam Houston Race Park will also pay tribute to three Texas horsemen: John Buchanan, Leon Bard and Jesse Yoakum with stakes named in their honor. Each trainer supported Sam Houston Race Park when it opened as the first Texas Class 1 racetrack in 1994 and for decades to follow. The $50,000 John Buchanan Memorial Stakes for 3-year-old fillies will be run on Saturday, June 4 and the $50,000 Jesse Yoakum Memorial 870 Stakes is set for Saturday, June 18. Bard, who passed away on January 5, 2022, will be fondly remembered on June 4 with the inaugural running of the $50,000-added Leon Bard Stakesfor 3 year-olds.
Racing will take place Thursday at 4:00pm, Friday and Saturday at 6:45 pm (Central) with special post times of 10:30 am for Kentucky Derby Day on Saturday, May 7; and 1:00 pm for the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 21 and the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 11.
