VETERAN MARE HOLDS SWAY LATE TO SCORE WIRE TO WIRE VICTORY
Carl Moore Management’s Imaluckycharm ran her career earnings past the $500,000 mark with a half-length decision in the Miss Bluebonnet Turf Stakes for trainer Karen Jacks. It was her second victory in the race, having taken top honors in it in 2023.
Breaking from the far outside in a field of ten, jockey Floyd Wethey, Jr. asked the daughter of My Golden Song for speed shortly after the start. She quickly assumed command in the first quarter-mile and opened up a sizable advantage through a strong half-mile in :46.73.
When the field turned for home, the veteran mare held a six-length advantage and began to drift out towards the center of the John B. Connally turf course. With Optimistic Cowgirl, the 2025 Miss Bluebonnet Turf Stakes winner, making a late push towards her, the winning post came at the right time, as she completed the mile on turf in 1:37.90.
“We wanted to keep her happy and hoped she settled, she went fast, but relaxed and held on” Wethey said.
Going into the Miss Bluebonnet Turf Stakes, trainer Karen Jacks added blinkers to the mare’s equipment, as she had dropped 6 of her last 7 starts after winning 12 of her first 22 outings.
“We decided to do something different; she’s always been a force to be reckoned with,” Jacks said. “She doesn’t like horses around her, so we put the blinkers on for a bit of privacy.”
The sizable early advantage that she opened up was unexpected by Jacks, and the field began swarming in with a furlong remaining. In the end, she was able to hold sway in career victory number fourteen.
“I was a little upset about how far in front she was,” Jacks said. “But it worked out because Wethey knew what he was doing.”
For Jacks, it was a 3rd victory in the Miss Bluebonnet Turf after winning it with Imaluckycharm in 2023 and her older half-sister, No Mas Tequila, in the 2022 edition.
Take My Picture was third in the field and was followed by race favorite Sky Rocker. Sweet Karat Cake, Cafezinho, Blood Orange, Blue Heavenly, Kissin Riches and Ruby Cantu completed the field. Too Much Kiki was scratched.
