Shop Time surged late to win the Jim’s Orbit Stakes, part of the Clarence Scharbauer, Jr. Texas Stallion Stakes Series and became sire Shoplifted’s first winner in the process. The dark bay gelding went from last-to-first in the field of five and completed the six furlongs in 1:12.19.

Carrying the colors of Jeffry and Julie Puryear, the Kevin Scholl trainee relaxed at the back of proceedings early, something Floyd Wethey, Jr. envisioned after he contested the pace in the My Dandy division of the Texas Stallion Stakes Series earlier in the Sam Houston Race Park thoroughbred meet.

“I had him closer last time (January 3) than he liked to have been,” Wethey said. “Today I just wanted to sit back just off of them and wait until the middle of the turn to let him do his thing. It played out well.”

The long-striding gelding hit his best stride around the far turn and into the stretch, eventually wearing down race favorite High Cinco in the final strides. His energy in the final furlong portends potential affinity for added ground.

"He has a big stride, and he let it work for him today, I imagine distance will be better for him," Wethey added.

A graduate of the Texas Thoroughbred Association April 2025 sale, he would be eligible for the Texas Thoroughbred Association Derby run at Sam Houston Race Park on March 21 as part of Texas Champions Day.

 Red Dirt Alley, Lexi’s Comeback and Witt’s Ten Touch completed the field.
