ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY AND FOREIGN RACING
The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues this Saturday with the $200,000 El Camino Real (G3) from Golden Gate and the $345,000 Haycinth Stakes from Tokyo Racecourse in Japan. And yes we will simulcast both races which means Japan Racing returns to SHRP this Saturday. The Haycinth is part of the undercard to the featured $1,900,000 February Stakes (G1). Click here for a preview of the 16 horse field in the February Stakes which includes two time defending champion Copano Rickey.
After this Saturday, we will next carry Japan Racing on Saturday March 25 and then every Saturday through June 3. We will also carry the Dubai World Cup on March 25.
Australian Racing continues every night at 7:00PM. The current schedule for New Zealand Racing (with some exceptions) is generally Tuesday through Friday nights.
Monday is President’s Day with many businesses closed. But SHRP is open. We will of course have our normal live racing card on Monday. Joining SHRP in running this Monday however will be several other tracks with special holiday programs including Laurel (11:35AM), Gulfstream (11:35AM),Aqueduct (11:55AM) Oaklawn (1:00PM), Santa Anita (2:30PM) and Golden Gate (2:45PM).
Oaklawn on Monday features the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) which is another Road to the Kentucky Derby Race and a prep for the Arkansas Derby, and the $500,000 Razorback Handicap (G3). Gun Runner returns to racing in the Razorback. Click here for a blog post from Brian Zipse of Horse Racing Nation. (@zipseatthetrack on Twitter).
IMPORTANT --- NEW IRS REGULATIONS
The US Treasury Department has proposed new IRS regulations to change the reporting requirements on winning wagers at horse and dog tracks. Assume today you make $2 exacta box wager on 3 horses for a total cost of $12 and it wins for $1100. You have an IRS ticket because it is considered to be a payment of over $600 on a wager of $2 or less.
Under the proposed new regulations, that would longer be true. The total cost of your $12 ticket would be used meaning your exacta would now have to pay $7,200 before being reportable.
All of this is a common sense change to reflect the reality of exotic wagers. This change would eliminate almost all IRS tickets.
Click here for more details and to send a comment to the Treasury Department in support of these proposed regulations.
