HOUSTON (May 9, 2008)—More than 7,700 Houstonians gathered at Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday, May 3, 2008 to celebrate The Park’s 14th Annual Kentucky Derby Day Celebration presented by Woodford Reserve. The day-long sporting and social event, the largest Derby party in the city, featured an exciting day of simulcast racing from Churchill Downs, fantastic traditional dining menus featuring foods served at Millionarie’s Row, and traditional Mint Julep cocktails in a commemorative Kentucky Derby glass.

Racing highlights for the evening included the 15th running of the $100,000 MAXXAM Gold Cup presented by Woodford Reserve, which was won by four-year old chestnut colt Reporting For Duty ($6.40) with a time of 1:52:33. The horse, jockeyed by Luis Quinonez and trained by Steve Asmussen, won by 4 ¾ lengths after taking command of the mid stretch down the 1 1/8 mile dirt course. |
