DROSSELMEYER WINS THE 142nd BELMONT STAKES ON SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 2010

HOUSTON (June 5, 2010)—WinStar Farm’s Drosselmeyer gave Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his first win in a Triple Crown race on Saturday, June 5, 2010.  Drosselmeyer wore down pacesetter First Dude and held off a late charge from Fly Down to win the Grade 1 $1 million Belmont Stakes under the guidance of Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

It was the first Belmont win for Smith, who guided the son of Distorted Humor to his first stakes victory.  WinStar Farm wanted to have Drosselmeyer compete in the Kentucky Derby, but the $600,000 yearling acquisition lacked the necessary earnings to make the field after finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Risen Star and third in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. One week after WinStar won the Derby with Super Saver, Drosselmeyer was heavily favored in the Grade 2 Dwyer here at Belmont, but was a well-beaten second behind Fly Down.

The Belmont Stakes, the final and most demanding leg of the Triple Crown, is known as the Test of the Champion for three-year-olds at a mile and a half.
