Clifton Royston Wins BIG on Kentucky Derby Day at Sam Houston Race Park
May 1, 2010
Clifton Royston, an Electrical Engineer and Project Manager for Cooper Crouse-Hinds, won big on Kentucky Derby Day at Sam Houston Race Park on May 1st hitting the $1 Superfecta and earning a whopping $101,284! Royston said he “won by accident” when he thought he selected the 11-horse (Devil May Care), only to figure out that after the race had concluded he had chosen the 9-horse (Make Music For Me) instead.
“I picked the 2-horse because 2 is my lucky number, but the rest was just pure luck,” commented a shocked Royston. “I grew up coming to Sam Houston Race Park when I was little. I used to always come with my dad, but I don’t ever remember him hitting anything this big!”
Royston attended the Derby Day festivities at The Park with his wife and cousin (pictured above). “My wife doesn’t usually bet, but we did this one together.”
The University of Louisiana-Lafayette alumnus was thrilled when he saw Calvin Borel, another Louisiana native, cross the finish line first. “I think because I lived in Louisiana and Calvin is from Louisiana that it might be a sign this was supposed to happen!”
Royston plans to use some of the winnings to pay off student loans and save the rest.
Congratulations to Clifton!!
