HOUSTON (May 17, 2009)—It was an exciting afternoon of live racing at Sam Houston Race Park as Calientes Wrangler ($6.80) broke a nine year record going 300 yards in :15.30 on Sunday, May 17. First Down Fame previously set the track record for 300 yards on August 11, 2000, with a time of :15.35.
Calientes Wrangler claimed the victory with jockey Manuel Garcia. The horse is owned by Efren Garcia Ramirez and trained by Bobby Touchet.
“This is really exciting for us to have such a great race and be able to break a long-standing track record,” said trainer Touchet. “We have worked hard and focused on some of the shorter distance races recently and this horse has really earned this victory.”
Calientes Wrangler will continue on the racing circuit in Texas and will return to The Park for additional racing dates for the 2009 American Quarter Horse meet.
Live racing events at Sam Houston Race Park will continue every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in May.
