FOGHAT & BLUE ÖYSTER CULT COMING TO THE SHOWGROUNDS FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CONCERT EVENT

FOGHAT & BLUE ÖYSTER CULT COMING TO THE SHOWGROUNDS FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CONCERT EVENT

HOUSTON (April 9, 2010)—The Classic Sound of Rock & Blues Comes to Houston!  Classic rock power houses Foghat (www.foghat.net) and Blue Öyster Cult (www.blueoystercult.com) will take the stage as part of the 2010 Verizon Wireless Summer Concert Series on the Bud Light Stage at The Showgrounds at Sam Houston Race Park (www.theshowgrounds.com) on Saturday, May 29, 2010.  Tickets go on sale beginning Friday, April 23 at 10 a.m.

The Memorial Day Weekend celebration also includes live racing events and a motorcycle fundraiser benefiting POW-MIA Families (www.pow-miafamilies.org) starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday.  Live racing post time is 5 p.m.  Concert gates open at approximately 8:15 p.m.; show starts at 8:45 p.m.

In the late 1960’s Roger Earl & Lonesome Dave Peverett first toured America as members of the seminal British band Savoy Brown.  Together with guitarist Kim Simmonds, the band was on the cutting edge of the emerging British blues-rock scene, influencing countless musicians on both sides of the pond.  In 1971, wanting to give a more rock 'n roll flavor to the blues-boogie music, Dave & Roger enlisted lead/slide guitarist Rod Price & bassist Tony Stevens and officially formed Foghat—the rest is part of music history.

Foghat recorded their first self-titled LP and began touring relentlessly for four decades. Their hard work has thus far been rewarded with seven Gold records, one Platinum record “Fool For The City” (1975), and one Double-Platinum record “Foghat Live” (1977). The “Fool For The City” album contained the band’s trademark Top 40 hit song Slow Ride and cemented their place as one of the world's top rock acts. They continued to hit the charts in the 1970's with singles such as Fool For The City, Drivin' Wheel, I Just Wanna Make Love To You, I'll Be Standing By, Stone Blue, Third Time Lucky and Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed, many of which are still classic rock radio staples today.

Spanning three decades, Blue Öyster Cult has a long and storied history. The band got its start in the late 1960’s on Long Island, New York, as the Soft White Underbelly, but each member had been involved in bands previously before ending up in the “right place at the right time” to create the beginnings of Blue Öyster Cult.  The band, while working on finding the best mix of musicians, toured relentlessly and worked on a series of albums.  It wasn’t until the mid-1970’s that the band produced, “Agents of Fortune” which contained the now iconic hit single Don’t Fear The Reaper.  The single changed everything for the band. Suddenly BÖC went from a best-kept secret among the faithful to widespread name recognition.

The band followed up the success they established with Don’t Fear The Reaper, and penned more notable hits including Burnin’ For You, Astronomy, Godzilla and Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll.  The band continues to play to sold out audiences of all ages and is guided by original members Eric Bloom (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Buck Dharma (lead guitar, vocals).
