V106.9 The Point & The Park Searching for Houston’s Most Talented Singers to Perform National Anthem For Live Racing Event Dates Throughout The Summer
HOUSTON (April 8, 2009)—Oh, say, can you sing?Sam Houston Race Park (www.shrp.com) and KHPT 106.9 The Point (www.1069thepoint.com) are looking for Houston’s most talented singers to participate in a National Anthem Singing Contest on Thursday, April 16, 2009 from 2 to 7 p.m. The contest is open to performers of all ages. Registration forms are available on-site. Auditions are organized on a first-come, first-served basis.
Selected soloists, duos, groups, choirs and instrumentalists will be invited to perform the National Anthem during one of The Park’s 54 live racing dates this summer at the 2009 American Quarter Horse Meet. Auditions will be held trackside in the winner’s circle before a panel of celebrity judges. Contestants will have two minutes to perform an a cappella version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Contestants are allowed to perform acoustic versions of the song with instruments (no power will be provided on-site), however; no tracked music will be allowed.
Aspiring performers are urged to memorize the lyrics, keep their performance under two minutes and be prepared for a sound delay from the public address system. Those chosen to sing the National Anthem on a live race day will be notified prior to opening of the American Quarter Horse meet, which will take place on Friday, May 1. Selected participants will receive four box seats for live racing events the day of their performance.
Contestants who cannot attend the auditions are encouraged to submit a video performance for a separate online contest by Friday, April 25. Video clips should be submitted via email to StarsandStripes@shrp.com. Online submissions will be judged by the online community; online contest winners will be notified via email.
The Park will host Grand Re-Opening Weekend Celebration Friday, May 1 through Sunday, May 3, 2009. The weekend includes live racing and fireworks (May 1); the 135th Running of the Kentucky Derby, afternoon live racing and a post-race concert from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts with special guests The Smithereens (May 2); and live racing and brunch at the Winner’s Circle Restaurant (May 3). The Park’s 54-day summer live racing meet features racing events Friday through Sunday in May; and Thursday through Saturday June through August.
