CONGRATULATIONS SAM HOUSTON RACE PARK TRAINER STEVE ASMUSSEN

(November 25, 2008)—Sam Houston Race Park trainer Steve Asmussen broke his own North American record for most wins in a calendar year when Prophesy won the first race November 23 at Remington Park.  Asmussen is the track’s leading trainer.

The 3-year-old gray filly became win number 556 in 2008 for the massive Asmussen operation, which has horses competing at multiple tracks around the United States and Canada.  The old mark of 555 was established by Asmussen in 2004.

“We’ve had a tremendous year, made possible by some tremendous opportunities and my outstanding help,” said Asmussen. “The success we’ve had with the Curlins and the Pyros has been fantastic. But we came from a small, Midwestern track, and I like to think that we remember where we came from.”

Prophesy was sent off as the even-money favorite and won by a half-length under Luis Quinonez. The Pulpit filly is owned by William Clifton Jr. of Waco, Texas, and was bred in Kentucky by Syd Belzberg, James Keogh and Kathryn Nikkel.

Asmussen added another race at Remington Park at the end of the program to end the day with 557 North American wins.  Heiligbrodt Racing Stable’s Foam won over the turf at 7 ½ furlongs under Quinonez. Every win from this point on in 2008 establishes a new record of wins in a calendar year by Asmussen.
