ICE MIST WINS THE $50,000 JERSEY LILLY STAKES IN FRONT-RUNNING FASHION

The freezing temperatures that forced Friday night's cancellation at Sam Houston Race Park were all but forgotten on Saturday night as a talented field of fillies and mares competed in the $50,000 Jersey Lilly Stakes. It was only fitting that Ice Mist, a 4-year-old filly from the barn of Bernie Flint captured the mile and one-sixteenth feature.

Flint shipped the Maryland-bred daughter of Forest Danger to Sam Houston Race Park from Fair Grounds on Friday. He felt that the Connally Turf Course would suit her front-running style. Jockey Chris Landeros, who won the Grade 3, Connally Turf Cup last weekend at Sam Houston, had the call. Landeros sent the bay filly to the lead and she responded gamely, holding off her ten rivals as she drew off to a two-length lead.

"I spoke to Mr. Flint this morning and he told me that the filly likes to be on the lead," said Landeros. "She was comfortable from the beginning and seemed to really like the Houston turf course,"

Ice Mist is owned by Naveed Chowhan and made her tenth turf start this evening. She crossed the wire in a final time of 1:45.29 over a firm turf course. Another Fair Grounds shipper, War Tigress, was in pursuit, but never caught the winner.

"I stalked her the whole way around the track; I just couldn't catch up with her," said rider Bobby Walker, Jr.

Blushing Dixie, under Larry Taylor, closed for third followed by the high earner in the field, Hisse, who was ridden by Quincy Hamilton. Check My Halo Nau, Girlsfest, Cherry Pink, Mizzcan'tbewrong, Caloosahatchee, Ruby's Big Band and Slide on Bye completed the order of finish. Jockey Lindey Wade lodged an objection regarding a faulty starting gate for Caloosahatchee, but following the steward's review of the start, no action was taken.
